Until now, the landscapes and places that have been considered symbolic of Beijing in Chinese cinema are the newly built city centre, such as the Palace, Tiananmen Square and the CCTV building. Most of them are Beijing as seen by the outside eye. In contrast, how do people living in Beijing perceive the city?

For example, the government housing complex ‘Daiyuan’, depicted in the films Year of Black Snow and Boy in the Sun, is a record of memories about the city’s landscape and atmosphere. A talk by Zhao Qi (CAT), a Beijing-born doctoral student at the University of Tokyo, including an introduction to these films, and a subsequent discussion on how the city, architecture and people envision Beijing.
